I don’t really get the comparisons to Hunter S. Thompson, other than the fact that he is another writer who openly discusses using and enjoying drugs. Where Hunter Thompson was manic and unhinged and obsessed with politics and violence and Americana, the writing here is calm, understated, and centers on day-to-day life on the fringes in a midwestern urban setting. Overall I find I relate to these stories more than say, “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas.”
